Pouilly-sur-Loire
About 30-minute drive from where I live in Burgundy is Pouilly-sur-Loire.
Pouilly-sur-Loire is an attractive village (or small town) in the department of Nièvre best known for white wines like Pouilly Fumé and Pouilly-sur-Loire.
Pouilly Fumé wines are made exclusively from Sauvignon Blanc grape while Pouilly-sur-Loire uses only Chasselas grapes.
Pouilly-Fumé has a softer, slightly smoky taste from the flint soil but Pouilly-sur-Loire is crisper and should be drunk young.
I tried both in the bar I went to and definitely preferred the Fumé. In the bar they usually used the Pouilly-sur-Loire for Kir.
The vine-yards at Pouilly date back to the 5th Century, to the early days of the Roman Empire but it was the Benedictine monks who actually developed Pouilly-Fumé.
