Malvern Hills
I often go to The Malverns… driving from Birmingham (takes about an hour) or getting a train to Malvern Link.
There is parking near the North Malvern Clock Tower, which is at the northern end of the hills, or the North Quarry Car Park which is nearby.
These are both at the beginning of paths that go up North Hill.
This clock tower sits above a reservoir built to supply the town with water.
The slides below show some of the fantastic views across Malvern
British Camp
I recently decided to visit the British Camp, the remains of an Iron Age hill fort. There is a convenient car park (and a nice cafe) and is easy to walk to the top of the British camp, although you get a better view of the earthworks from the north side.
I went on a circular walk to pass Gullets Quarry which looked interesting. It turned out that there had been several deaths at Gullet Quarry (14 in 5 years) so it is now heavily fenced off (even though the car park is conveniently open.
The quarry used to be popular for wild swimming (see this link)
This walk passes the British Camp Reservoir and Clutter’s Cave on the way to the British Camp.
Clutter’s Cave is a man-made cave hewn from granite and probably a medieval hermit’s dwelling but could have just been an Edwardian folly. Also known as Giant’s Cave or Waum’s Cave. A spring once lay beneath that supplied water to the camp.
Great Malvern Station
Great Malvern station retains most of its Victorian charm and looks just like the stations I used to build on my model railway layout.
It was opened by the Worcester and Hereford Railway in 1860 and the present buildings, by architect Edmund Wallace Elmslie, were completed in 1862.
They have kept most of the original fittings, even the luggage trolleys.
Droitwich Spa Lido
Sometimes, in the Summer I go back via the Droitwich Spa Lido, one of the few remaining outdoor saltwater pools in the country, using Droitwich Spa’s own local salt.
